Dithered Flowers
Inspiration
I was inspired by Image Go Nord and Dither Me This. I also loved the aesthetics of Pico-8: the limited colour palette, the low resolution, and the fun little games made using it. Celeste was initially released as a Pico-8 Game, and then made as a full game.
Process
I started by looking through flower images on Unsplash, and then choosing ~100 images to begin with. I then went through each of them one by one, and cropped them into a 1:1 square, using the default Windows Photos app. I did this manually since I wanted control over the framing of the picture.
I then resized the images to a common size using Windows PowerTools. This step didn't take long at all, since PowerTools can do this with a batch of images at once.
Here's where things get blurry: I did this small experiment back in mid-2023, and documenting the process later means that this article is just based on my (bad) memory and mostly guesswork. But here's what I think happened:
- I chose a colour palette, from Base-16. Most notable candidates are One Dark Pro or Tomorrow Night 80s.
- I dithered a single image at a time from the cropped collection above using one of the two tools above, and then kept or discarded the image for the collection.
This left me with a collection of 71 images, which you can find below.
